32 2.2 The Purchasing Process and Technologies

By the end of this section, you should be able to:

1.  Identify the steps in the conventional purchasing process and cycle and the inefficiencies of traditional purchasing procedures.

2.  Describe e-commerce, e-business and e-procurement.

3.  Describe EDI, the advantages of this purchasing technology and the challenges.

ISO 9000 standard defines procedure as a specified way to carry out an activity or a process. It can be either documented or undocumented. Procedures are ready-made framework, a series of interrelated sequential steps that can be used to respond to a well-structured problem. Procedures are also the formal arrangements by means of which policies linking strategies are implemented.
